Level 2 Functional Skills: A Different Route to English & Maths

Our Level 2 Functional Skills programme offers young people aged 14–16 a practical and supportive alternative route to gaining recognised English and maths qualifications.

Delivered by Nicola from The Development Den at Lancashire Wildflowers Learning Hub CIC in Preston, the programme is designed for learners who may benefit from a smaller group, SEND-aware teaching and a less overwhelming approach than a traditional classroom environment.

Learning is practical, relevant and connected to real-life situations. Each learner will receive support with the skills and knowledge needed for the qualification, alongside mock assessments and focused exam preparation.

To help reduce pressure and overwhelm, learners will study one subject at a time. Families can choose which subjects they wish to complete and how long they would like to spread them over.

The programme includes:

• Small, supportive groups

• Practical, real-life learning

• SEND-aware teaching

• One subject studied per term

• 20 hours of guided learning per subject

• Mock assessments and exam preparation

• Shorter exam times than traditional GCSE examinations

• The option to sit the exam at home or with us

• A cost-effective qualification route for home-educating families

  
  

Autumn Maths Programme

Sessions take place on Mondays from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

• Monday 28 September: relaxed meet-and-greet session

• Monday 5 October to Monday 19 October: teaching sessions

• Half-term break

• Monday 9 November to Monday 14 December: teaching sessions

• The examination can then be taken at a suitable time

Maths Sessions:

28th Sept - Getting to know you session plus diagnostic assessment. 

THEN 10 sessions:

1. Number

2. Calculations

3. Ratio & Proportion

4. Money & Finances 

5. Measures & Geometry 

6. Algebra and Sequences

7. Data & Statistics 

8. Multi Step Problems 

9. Exam walk-through with revision set. 

10. Mock exam (marking and feedback provided for every child following this).

English reading and writing will follow in the next terms. Nicola teaches one subject at a time to allow young people to focus on the topic at hand.

Cost

The learning programme costs £250 per subject.

The examination is booked separately after the programme and currently costs £125 through Functify. The examination price is subject to change.

Level 2 Functional Skills qualifications are widely accepted as alternatives to GCSE grade 4 in English and maths. However, individual colleges, apprenticeships and courses set their own entry requirements, so families should check the requirements for any intended next step.
